About Mai
Dr. Mai Nguyen's journey with Walnut Creek and Vallejo Optometry Groups began in 2016, when she joined the practice as an optician, ophthalmic technician, and billing administrator. Through these roles, she gained extensive experience in many aspects of patient care and practice operations. She continued working part-time with the practices while completing her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at San Francisco State University and later her Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry.
During her optometric education, Dr. Nguyen demonstrated a strong commitment to clinical excellence and patient-centered care. Upon graduating in 2026, she was honored to receive three distinguished awards recognizing her achievements in primary eye care, sports vision, and neuro-optometric rehabilitation.
After completing her optometric training at UC Berkeley, Dr. Nguyen returned to Walnut Creek and Vallejo Optometry Groups as a primary eye care provider, bringing her journey with the practice full circle. Having worked with the practice for many years, she values the opportunity to continue caring for the community and building long-term relationships with patients and their families. Under the mentorship of Dr. Bach-Kim Nguyen, she has gained invaluable firsthand experience in every aspect of the practices, learning the ins and outs of both patient care and business operations. As Dr. Bach-Kim Nguyen's designated successor, she looks forward to carrying on her mentor's legacy of compassionate, quality eye care upon her retirement.
Dr. Nguyen is passionate about providing comprehensive, patient-centered eye care. Her clinical interests include primary eye care, pediatric optometry, binocular vision, sports vision, and myopia management. She particularly enjoys helping children and adults achieve their best possible vision, whether through managing ocular health, improving visual comfort and performance, or developing strategies to slow the progression of myopia.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Nguyen is committed to community service and expanding access to quality eye care. During optometry school, she served as President of VOSH Berkeley and participated in volunteer vision care initiatives.
Outside of the office, Dr. Mai Nguyen enjoys photography, traveling, discovering new foods and boba shops, volunteering, and spending time with her family and her beloved fur babies, Max and Malika.
